Creating an impact and spreading a positive ripple effect is a top priority for many leaders. Itâs not enough to just be one of the crowd and hum along with the status quo. What excites us is making a significant difference. Committing to leaving things better than we found them and inspiring others to do the same.
I attended the live Ithaca College Zoom graduation ceremony for my niece over the weekend. Funny how times have quickly changed and the rituals that we took for granted are now craved by todayâs generation - like having your family present to see you walk across the stage to celebrate your accomplishments. Nonetheless, with the power of technology, we were able to feel connected.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was quoted often in the speeches. Sheâs honored for her bravery and how she blazed a trail for other women leaders.
One of her quotes especially jumped out at me â
"Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you."
I love this aspect of leadership because itâs not about having followers...itâs about collaboration and inspiring others to courageously stand up for what they believe in.
In order to be an effective leader, we must start with self-leadership. We know in our gut when someone walks the walk and puts their advice into action and when they donât. The âdo as I say and not as I doâ approach is not only outdated but out of integrity. I know if youâre listening to this thatâs not acceptable for you or for those that you admire.
Iâll dig into self-leadership on next weekâs episode but today, I want to focus on impact. If we allow ourselves to function on cruise control itâs going to be nearly impossible to create a life that makes a difference. If outside circumstances influence us to just get by and make it through the day, how will we be able to stand out and rise above the noise to share our powerful messages?
I want you to ask yourself, Am I making a big enough impact in the world?
Donât let thinking of âthe worldâ overwhelm you! I feel sometimes, we shy away from leadership thinking weâre not cut out for it. Like we have to be expert speakers on the big stage with millions of TedTalk views on YouTube to make a difference. This is a limiting belief and itâs not true.
Effecting 1 person can be powerful. Being influential in your community can have a lasting impact.
You have the power to make lasting change, to create significant work, and to positively impact peopleâs lives. Starting with your own, expanding to your family and inner circle, and then expanding further to your Community and then perhaps even larger.
Remember, your energy has the power to reach the other end of the globe. Think of prayer and positive intentions. Think of the frequency of light and sound waves. Science has shown that light can travel 300,000 kilometers per second and Sound can travel in air at approximately 332 meters per second. Pretty mind-blowing!
Embrace that everything is energy. Remember, that people, places, and things vibrate at a certain frequency. Choose to vibrate higher. Be around things that uplift you. Our frequency and intention actually do have the power to create global change and transformational uprising.
Begin seeing how you can increase your impact today.
When you have time, grab a piece of paper or whip out the note section on your phone. Jot down how you can increase your impact. In what ways can you make your work more meaningful? How can you significantly improve your leadership?
This is a fun exercise that will help you get your juices flowing. Pick 1 or 2 things from your list and put them into action today. Start small, because we know new habits stick when they are doable. And, remember to celebrate yourself when you take every single mico-action.
So, if when you close out your day at night and know deep in your soul that you were meant for more, that you have more to give - remember to -
Set your intentions
Start small
Start today
Keep showing up
We have the potential to be powerhouses!
As Abraham Maslow said - "What one can be, one must be."
We must carry out what we were put on this earth to accomplish.
Increase your impact and increase your fulfillment starting today.
Until next week my friend...breathe joy!
