I'm just coming back from a ride on the back of my partner's Harley. Despite the sun shining, it was chilly. But I love taking in the beauty of fall, the crisp air, the changing elements, and of course the multicolored leaves. Today there was burnt umber and red and gold and varying shades of green and beautiful deep plums. And it got me thinking about change.

Nature naturally changes. It changes with the seasons with the weather, with location, with population. And we come to expect these changes. We know that when our nights become longer and the temperatures become cooler, the plants that we put in our gardens at the top of the Summer start to shift, change, color, shrivel, and some eventually die off. We never question these cycles and have come to accept that they are common rhythms of nature.

But what about you? Do you embrace change? Do you instigate change? Or do you wait until you have no choice and then reluctantly try to adapt to the circumstances?

I know post pandemic many people have used and overused the word pivot. In fact, I just ran into an old friend the other day and told her that I was towards the end of a pivot. And she immediately blurted out, "I am so sick of that word!"
Kc Rossi 2:12
Sometimes we are forced or pushed into a pivot. It could be from a loss of income, an illness, or an unforeseen challenge like the devastating hurricane that occurred this month in Florida. In situations like those, we are in a reaction mode versus a deep conscious shift. We are responding to life circumstances and in many times, we are just doing our best, we just wanted to survive make it through just get by.

When was the last time that you contemplated in your life or business, a need for a change? And change comes in all kinds of sizes. You could need to make a slight tweak. So a minor or a micro change. Or you may need to make a drastic change. And of course there are many varying levels of alteration in between.

I love to look at things through a holistic lens. So thinking about change, we are called to modify things in our life due to something physical, emotional, spiritual, and/or financial. So let's take a look at a physical example. My longtime friend Vicki is an electrolysist. She has been working hard in her field for 41 years. I recently asked her when she was planning on retiring as her 65th birthday is just around the corner. She shrugged and kind of laughed and said, "When my eyes give out." And this is a physical instance of when what you do may not work anymore because of a limitation. There are many professions like this, especially repetitive motion service oriented ones like hers, but then other blue collar categories like mechanics or construction. And then one's you may not think of like my friend who was a talented aromatherapist for years, but then lost her sense of smell. Which not only put a wrench in her services, but also caused an identity wobble.

Many of us wrap ourselves up in what we do — it defines us. When the time comes to answer the question, "Who am I if not (fill in the blank)? It can cause quite a stir. And I can relate to this. After selling my candy company of 17 years, I had my own identity wobble. I was so woven in to being in my role and part of a dynamic duo that when it came time to define myself as a solopreneur or even as a person, it was a challenge. One that took coaching and time to identify. Who was I without a title? Without a staff? Without the accolades?

Maybe you have something in your life that you can relate to. When was the time that you lost a part of yourself, it could be a position, a job, a partner, or a role as a parent even which is really common when the kiddos leave the house and start their own adult life. Interesting to ponder.

There could be an emotional disconnect that causes disruption in your work. Perhaps you were in a consulting position, and it fueled you ... until it didn't. And then it became a draining, thankless position that you dreaded. One of my associates is a graphic designer, she's been in her position for years. And over time, she began to feel emotionally drained by all the client critiques, all of the kinds of client demands, and really felt that her creativity was limited by certain expectations or "in the box" requests from clients. So she's in the middle of pivoting to selling her own fine artwork. And this way it can be on her terms. It's a pretty cool process to witness. All the "feels" are there from doubt, to letting go of security in order to pursue her dreams and everything in between.
Kc Rossi 6:21
So I'm reminded of nature again, here. It doesn't hold on to its leaves, when it no longer serves the greater good. The tree must shed must let go to survive the winter. So my question to you, what do you need to let go of even if it feels uncomfortable, but you know, deep in your gut, it's time?
Kc Rossi 6:48
I'll never forget the powerful Zen proverb, "Let go or be dragged." Let go or be dragged.
Kc Rossi 6:59
Maybe as you grow and deepen in your spirituality, something that you once offered, doesn't quite fit or feels off. It could be the way that you approach sales, which is easy to understand, because much of the bro marketing emphasizes pressing on pain points to pressure your prospective client into making the right decision, and fast, right are they're going to lose out. I'm sure you can come up with a sleazy sales situation that you just wanted to run away from, whether it was buying a car, or being enrolled in a high ticket program.
Kc Rossi 7:37
And then there is the financial part of the puzzle. Perhaps what you charge doesn't feel in alignment with what you offer any more. Maybe you have additional credentials that bump up your status, or more hours in your field of expertise that have brought you better and faster results for your client. Maybe, it's time to stop trading dollars for hours, and charge based on the transformations that you provide, versus marketing your fees like transactional line items.
Kc Rossi 8:06
As you can see, there are so many reasons that prompt change. However, our minds like safety. And because of that, we often stay in our comfort zones because it's familiar and safe. Now is the time to take inspiration from nature. The colors are changing, the leaves are falling. Take a moment to look at your magnificent surroundings. No matter how challenging the circumstances, nature heals and bounces back. It may take time, but it rejuvenates itself.
Kc Rossi 8:43
Change can be exciting, renewing, strengthening, and has the power to inspire others to look within and do the same. When we can start to look at change through this lens, with this perspective, that it's not something that's daunting or a "have to," but something that we actually "get to choose." It can be very, very empowering and exciting. When we start to look at it through the filter of choice and excitement. We're really opening ourselves up to endless possibilities.
Kc Rossi 9:21
I'm curious, what's one step that you can take towards change? How about you do that today? And as a little aside, I'd love to know what that is, so I can energetically support you all the way.
Kc Rossi 9:36
Until next time, my friend. Breathe joy.
